Beyond the résumé

Interview questions I am often asked, answered

Short, honest answers to the questions hiring teams usually ask. If yours is not here, ask me above.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a marketing and digital strategy leader with more than 30 years of experience connecting strategy, technology and audience insight to drive measurable growth. My career spans manufacturing, distribution, corporate communications, consulting and higher education, and for the past eight years I have also taught marketing and business communication at the college and university level.

What value would you bring to our organisation?

I combine strategic leadership, digital expertise, educational experience and more than 30 years of practical business experience. That mix lets me set direction, build the systems to deliver it and develop the people who carry it forward, so organisations can adapt, grow and stay competitive in a fast-changing environment.

Why are you seeking a new opportunity?

I am deliberately looking for a role where leadership, innovation, digital transformation and meaningful organisational impact intersect. I want to put the full range of my experience to work in one place.

What experience do you have leading large-scale initiatives?

At Digital Security Controls I led international marketing and communications across more than 37 countries, managed budgets exceeding $1.5 million, supported more than 150 distributors and contributed to maintaining a Canadian market share above 70%. At Nedco I directed marketing across a 39-location national network and contributed to more than $8 million in direct sales growth.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Collaborative, transparent and adaptive. I believe leaders should create clarity, remove barriers and empower their teams while maintaining strategic direction.

How do you build high-performing teams?

I set clear expectations, encourage collaboration and create an environment where people feel free to experiment, learn and contribute their expertise. At Paging Network of Canada that approach took a start-up inside sales function to the top-performing team in North America.

How do you approach organisational change?

Change begins with people. I create alignment, communicate purpose and help teams understand both the destination and their role in reaching it. When I led a CRM adoption for a 15-person sales team, small-group training on real accounts and two peer coaches cut support requests by more than 80% in the first month and reached full adoption within 60 days.

How do you build stakeholder buy-in?

I start by listening. Trust and alignment across stakeholders are essential to successful execution, and people support what they have helped shape.

Ask a follow-up

How do you handle ambiguity?

I break complex situations into manageable parts. My role is often to bring clarity where others see uncertainty.

Ask a follow-up

How do you measure success?

By outcomes: improved engagement, increased enrolment, stronger brands, better organisational performance and revenue. I define those measures before work begins and report honestly against them.

Ask a follow-up

How do you use data to inform decisions?

Data should reduce uncertainty, not add complexity. I focus on the insights that help leaders understand audience behaviour, measure performance and prioritise opportunities.

Ask a follow-up

What role does audience intelligence play in your work?

It is the foundation of every strategy I develop. Understanding behaviours, motivations and needs helps organisations create more relevant experiences and stronger relationships.

Ask a follow-up

How do you balance creativity with data?

I see marketing as a fusion of science, art and strategy. The best decisions happen when creativity and evidence work together rather than compete.

Ask a follow-up

How do you approach content strategy?

I treat content as an organisational asset rather than a marketing deliverable. Effective content educates, builds trust and creates connection over time.

Ask a follow-up

How has your approach to marketing changed over the course of your career?

Marketing has shifted from a channel-focused discipline to an interconnected ecosystem. I now see it as the intersection of data, technology, storytelling and human behaviour, and I build strategy for the whole ecosystem.

Ask a follow-up

Why are you interested in AI and digital transformation?

I have embraced emerging technologies early throughout my career and turned them into practical value. My aim is to make organisations more efficient, informed and future-ready, never to adopt technology for its own sake.

Ask a follow-up

What excites you most about the future of work?

Helping organisations navigate the space where AI, digital transformation and human-centred leadership meet.

Ask a follow-up

How do your higher education and corporate experiences complement one another?

Higher education sharpened my ability to teach, mentor and explain complex ideas. Corporate work built my strategic, operational and commercial expertise. Together they make me a leader who can both set the strategy and develop the people who execute it.

Ask a follow-up

How do you stay current in a rapidly evolving field?

Continuous learning has been constant throughout my career. I actively explore emerging technologies, industry trends, research and new digital platforms, and I build with them myself.

Ask a follow-up

What differentiates you from other marketing leaders?

My career spans multiple sectors and three decades of technological change. I combine strategic leadership, digital fluency, audience intelligence and change management with hands-on technology implementation and a teacher's ability to bring people along.
